Vegan Spots: La Venganza, Oakland, CA
Here’s the first in a series of vegan (and vegan friendly) restaurants from my travels.
On recommendation from my friend (fellow musician and vegan) Bradley Skaught, La Vengaza, a Mexican restaurant (with all house made proteins) was a no brainer!
With my gig schedule, Sunday was the only time I had available to check it out. Turns out that they have a brunch only menu on Sundays; while I admit for a moment I was bummed that I wasn’t gonna be able to order the taco sampler, once my food arrived any regrets were washed away.
I was feeling pretty ravenous after looking at menu, and the breakfast burrito essentially chose itself. I let staff know that it was my first time there, and I got a friendly recommendation for the house made bacon. I’ve been carefully watching my intake of vegan meats lately, and am also not really crazy about any of the plant based bacon I’ve tried (and, no, I sure as hell don’t miss ‘real bacon’), but I went with it. As soon as the first bite hit, I was so thankful for both Bradley’s recommendation and the bacon nudge… it’s delicious! The (assuming seitan based) bacon is crisp and incredibly flavorful without being overdone or over-salted. It has a subtle, smoky, deliciousness. Very, very impressive!
The burrito was stuffed with perfectly roasted potatoes, soy ‘egg’, pinto beans, and perfect ripe avocado slabs.
Delicious, not heavy, and not too salty. Vegan burrito perfection!
I can’t wait for my next visit to try the taco sampler!
